FEATURES OF FEMININITY

FEATURES OF FEMININITY

is an ongoing photographic series Daantje started in 2013 that challenges rooted ideals and limited perceptions of femininity, gender, and sexuality. It is also a deeply personal investigation into my own masculine and feminine sides, exploring how these aspects coexist and interact within me. As a visual artist, I draw from my own experiences to examine learned patterns and societal norms that shape identity. For me, photography is a powerful tool for self-expression—one that allows me to openly address taboo issues and speak my mind.

Through this series, I play with aesthetic appeal and combine it with a provocative twist, resulting in images that are often humorous or absurd. This interplay of attraction and provocation is central to my work, creating an inviting space to spark conversations about complex and sensitive subjects.

“Features of Femininity” blends intuitive self-portraits and carefully composed stilllifes to question the narrow, constructed image of femininity in Western culture. Using humor and visual playfulness, I aim to challenge the viewer to look twice, offering a perspective that is both critical and deeply personal.

“Features of Femininity” has received widespread recognition, having been published in a variety of prominent outlets including The Huffington Post, Ignant, Kurrier, and i-D Magazine. These features highlight the series’ impact and its ability to spark meaningful conversations about femininity, gender, and identity on an international stage.
